Position Rationale:
Reporting to the Foreman, a Tractor Backhoe Operator is responsible for the safe and efficient operation of a tractor backhoe and will perform duties as assigned to ensure that completed work is delivered according to Volker Stevin Contracting Ltd.’s company policies and procedures, Alberta Occupational Health and Safety, and Contract specifications. This position utilizes a tractor backhoe with both the front bucket/forks and rear boom with a variety of attachments, including but not limited to: digging bucket, breaker, and tamper.
Position Accountabilities:
- Operate a tractor backhoe and other heavy equipment in a safe and appropriate manner.
- Perform daily maintenance and safety checks on equipment.
- Perform routine daily cleaning and maintenance to ensure smooth operation.
- Conduct pre-operational checks on equipment, and clean, lubricate and refuel equipment as necessary.
- Understand, interpret, and follow directions from supervisors as to required work area.
- Ensure trenches are excavated safely to the proper depth/grade.
Technical Knowledge:
- Possess knowledge of tractor backhoe operation and other heavy equipment.
- Knowledge of underground utility construction materials, processes and industry requirements.
- Understanding of computerized controls and electronics.
- Understanding of DEF systems and operation standards.
Working Environment/Conditions:
- Work is performed in an outdoor setting, which could include inclement weather, heat, and humidity.
- Must be physically able to repetitively lift and carry at least 30 LBS on a regular basis.
- Must comply with the Company’s drug and alcohol testing requirements.
- Possible out of town and weekend work as required.
The ideal candidate for this position will possess the following:
Qualifications & Experience
- High School Diploma or G.E.D. is preferred.
- Class 5 Driver’s License with a clean Driver’s Abstract (as per Company policy), is preferred.
- Preferred minimum 1 – 3 years of experience within the underground utility construction industry.
- Minimum 1 – 3 years of experience operating a tractor backhoe is required.
- Knowledge of underground industry standards, and OH&S requirements.
