Position Rationale:
Heavy-Duty Journeyman Technician diagnoses, maintains, and repairs mechanical and electrical issues on road construction equipment and light fleet trucks. Additionally, reducing equipment down time and minimizing repair costs on all equipment to ensure they continue to run safely at optimum efficiency.
Position Accountabilities:
- Perform maintenance and repair activities on various pieces of heavy equipment, including pavers, loaders, skid steers, graders, excavators, dozers, backhoes, and trucks.
- Inspect, repair, and adjust gasoline, propane, and diesel-powered units.
- Diagnose, service and repair various systems found on pieces of heavy equipment, such as mechanical and computer electronic controls, air brake systems, transmissions, propane powered equipment and pneumatic systems.
- Ensure fleet equipment repairs are completed in a timely manner.
- Ensure required parts and supplies are identified and ordered as per VSH process.
- Tools required to repair Light and Heavy trucks are available for completion of repairs.
- Monitor equipment performance and identify problem areas, document problems and solutions.
- Work closely to arrange for and obtain appropriate approval for all repairs before the vehicle is released from the maintenance facility.
Work Environment/Conditions:
- Work will primarily be conducted in various shop environments, with occasional work outside in various weather conditions.
- Work hours are full-time, but hours can be flexible, and they vary with the season. In addition, work may involve shifts, weekends, and overtime.
- The work is physically demanding and involves heavy lifting (e.g., 50 – 100 lbs.). Often working with grease, oil, dirt, and diesel fuel, and are exposed to fumes and noise.
- Technicians are required to have their own tools.
The ideal candidate for this position will possess the following:
Qualifications & Experience
- Alberta Journeyperson Heavy Duty Mechanic license.
- Valid Class 1 (preferred) or Class 3 driver’s license with air endorsement.
- Valid driver’s clean abstract.
- Valid CVIP inspection license or ability to obtain a CVIP inspection license.
- Extensive experience in all aspects of repair to highway maintenance equipment.
- Demonstrated abilities in equipment repair and maintenance.
- Must be Computer literate (e.g., equip. diagnostic systems, search equipment repairs, diagnoses, etc.)
- Must be focused on driving high delivery standards and give high attention to detail.
- Experience in off and on road equipment repair is an asset.
